This time of year we don’t typically talk a lot about immunity. I’m bringing it up because cleaning up your diet can improve the integrity and health of your gut and if you fall off the dietary wagon, you are at risk of irritating things again. This can leave you susceptible to illness. Foreign invaders either get taken out in the digestive tract by all of the good healthy flora breeding there or those invaders end up breeding themselves and throwing a temporary coup that takes over. Maintaining the right balance of the good guys over the bad guys at all times, like in any good fight takes work and boy, you guessed where I am going here- the food you eat is the best place to start.
Eat whole fruits and vegetables, not only for the minerals and vitamins they contain, but also due to the fact that they grow with good bacteria on them that helps our guts. Have fermented foods (for example: sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles -the real deal not the sugary stuff-) as a regular visitor on your plate to provide even more variety of ‘good guy’ bacteria. Bone broths are my personal weapon too, as they are a great snack and also teaming with probiotics.
So, the next time you find yourself feeling a under the weather stick with the program. The ‘bad guy’ bacteria love nothing more than yeast and sugar to pump themselves up for battle. Starve them and fuel the good guys with whole foods.
